Philip J. Rock Center and School
We donated shirts 0 to 0 to children in need here.
"The Be A Number t-shirt drop at Philip Rock Center was an event held by Elmhurst College’s Student Council for Exceptional Children (SCEC). It was a combination event held with a special holiday celebration called, “Special Kids Day”. The Philip J. Rock Center and School is funded by the Illinois State Board Education under Project Reach, a federal grant for programs that serve deaf-blind children and their families. The students who go to school here also live at the facility and receive constant support and attention from the staff members.
The event was a tremendous opportunity for these kids to have outside visitors and participate in a unique experience. While some of the students may not have fully understood what was going on they all embraced the experience and had a lot of fun with the volunteers and Kevin. It was a wonderful celebration to kick-start the holiday season and bring joy to some exceptional children.
My favorite memory from the event was the overall feeling and atmosphere. Most of the students were nonverbal, yet you could see their excitement and enjoyment through their endless smiles, dancing, and other modes of expression. Watching the students’ faces light up as they received their t-shirt was such a moment of pure joy that many of us take for granted. Though they may not have articulated this, I could tell that students really appreciated us being there and sharing this unique moment with them and will be forever grateful. ‘Be A Number” gives individuals hope and I think we gave these students much to look forward to and strive to become."
